Oma and Opa
This charcoal portrait of my Oma and Opa is a tribute to perseverance and resourcefulness. After fleeing the Netherlands at the end of World War II, my grandparents immigrated to Canada, unaware of the challenges of rural life and the harsh climate. With three young children and another on the way, they learned the language and built a beautiful life on a farm. Resourceful and resilient, they worked tirelessly—caring for animals, tending the land, and providing for their family—all in pursuit of a better future for their children. I never heard them complain, even though I know life was tough. I deeply admire their strength and hope they’re proud of the legacy they built. I wish I could ask them more questions today.
